DESIGNING OUTDOOR LIVING: CREATE AN INVITING SPACE

AHHHH, summer is coming!! And we will be able to entertain and have drinks with our friends while the kids run around. Right? Well, we humans are incredibly resilient and adaptive and insanely optimistic. So we will paint ourselves a beautiful summer picture and even if it’s just in our own backyards, we will spend time outdoors…lounging around, soaking up the vitamin D in our comfy chairs, with a drink in hand reading our favorite magazine.

Best way to enjoy your outdoor area is to make it feel and look as cozy and inviting as possible. Bringing the indoors out is key to making an outdoor living environment pleasant and beautiful. The inside should flow into the outside. Key components should include comfy lounging furniture, plants, music and lighting.

FURNITURE

Choose something that will compliment your indoor decor. For example, if your style is more conteporary with a lot of monochrome features, carry that theme through to the outdoors. Regardless of your style, comfort is key if you want to make this space inviting. Start with a large piece like a sectional, or two beautful lounge chairs if your space is small. Then work around those pieces, by adding lighting and accessories.

LIGHTING

Much like indoor lighting, there is something incredibly romantic about lighting your outdoor patio or garden. Professional outdoor and landscape lighting is stunning, but can be very expensive. An easy way to create ambiance is to introduce really pretty string lights with dimmers. Or if your outdoor area is covered, floor lamps are amazing too. Candles are another way to create ambiance. Remember uplighting as well as downlighting is key.

PLANTERS

You’re outdoors, so fill your space with color and foliage through plants. Large planters anchor a patio, while small planters can act as fillers on tables.

ACCESORIES

Ok, so time for some fun! Add your signature to it. Pillows, throws, objects such as water features and fireplaces are ways to make this space your own.
